Your bundle of joy is here, your newborn is sleeping soundly in your arms at the moment, and you just booked your baby’s first photo shoot. Excitement courses through you until it hits you. What in the world do you wear?! You’re only a couple, or a few, weeks postpartum and you just booked a photo shoot. Take a deep breath mama, I got you. Not only do I help you figure out what to wear to your newborn session, but you can also see what to expect here.
I know your brain is mush and trying to figure out a coordinated, but cute outfit, while juggling feeding, changing, and sleep schedules is not making things easier. So keep it simple. Remember, I’m there to photograph you all as a new family unit, to capture all of those sweet snuggles and moments that are real and happen naturally every day. This means that your outfits don’t need to be elaborate.
I always recommend our couples wear neutrals and be comfortable. Cute loungewear or a flowy maxi dress is perfect for your newborn session. I do encourage my couples to stay away from graphic tees or anything with loud patterns. We want the focus to be on you and your baby and those detract from that image.
The house needs to be a tad warmer than normal so that your baby stays nice and warm as we move through the photoshoot. Keep that in mind when you choose your outfits.
You want to keep it simple for your little one too. I know there are so many cute baby clothes and outfits but a simple, neutral onesie is really what works best for these sessions. We can always begin with the baby in a simple onesie and then do some diaper or naked shots. The simpler the outfit the easier this transition will be for you and your baby.
As a new mama, you are likely exhausted, the beautiful thing about a lifestyle session is how casual it is. You’ll want to do your hair and some natural make-up but that’s all you need to knock this session out of the park. Again, you’ll want this to be a casual look. Less is more.
When you book your newborn session with Pompy Portraits we include make-up so there’s one less thing to stress over.
I know how precious this time is and how vulnerable it is to allow someone into your home at this stage in your life. However, these photos will be ones you cherish and hold onto for the rest of your life. I have been photographing babies for almost five years so I can assure you that we’re going to have an incredible session.
If you’re expecting a little one we would love to give you the Pompy Experience. Contact us here for more information.
