The Client Closet | How to Dress Baby for Your Newborn Session

If you’ve ever taken family photos, you know planning outfits can be stressful. Newborn sessions are no different! You want baby to dress their best and you want to look good too. But those first days of life can be hectic and finding the perfect outfit for your newborn session is the last thing most people want to do.

I get it, Queen! That’s why in 2020 I started collecting newborn outfits. You deserve to enjoy this special experience and focus on your little one, rather than focus on finding the perfect swaddle.

I didn’t realize then that it was the start of one of my client’s favorite parts of the experience, but here we are! Two years later and a fully stocked newborn client closet that my clients get full access to for free.

Frequently asked questions about my newborn client closet

Who is your client closet for?

My client closet has outfits and accessories for newborns, pregnant women, and boudoir clients. The newborn section has almost everything your baby needs for our session – swaddles, bows, decorative baskets, crib safety pillows, and textured rugs. You name it!

All of my clients coming into the studio for their newborn session are welcome to borrow items for their sessions. No need to spend additional money on a one-time item or clean up after the session. My team and I will handle all of that.

Unfortunately, I don’t have outfits for dads or older siblings. Most of my families like to coordinate the adults and older siblings themselves. Mamas can borrow from my maternity gown selection, but you may feel more comfortable in a post-maternity outfit.

Do you offer styling tips to parents?

You bet! I offer all my families a pre-session planning appointment 2-3 weeks before the shoot. During your planning appointment, we can discuss styling baby, mama, dad, and any older siblings. I provide professional hair and makeup complimentary to all families who choose to do in-studio sessions. We can discuss what look you may want ahead of time and I’ll relay that to my glam team.

For families who choose to do at-home newborn sessions, my glam squad will come to you.

PS: Are you a Type-A prepper like a lot of my Mamas? I’ve got you covered! You’ll also receive my signature Newborn Prep Guide once you book your session, way ahead of our pre-planning appointment. It has tons of styling tips for the whole family, day-of tips, and more to help you feel prepared.

How do I choose an outfit for our newborn session?

Once you book your session, we’ll schedule a private planning session in-studio or on the phone to discuss your vision. In that planning session, I can offer advice for styling, outfits, any additional sentimental items you want to bring, and run through the selection process.

I typically recommend only one outfit for adults and older siblings. (Trust me, it makes the experience much smoother!) But we can plan for 2-3 different outfits for your baby usually, 2 swaddle looks and an outfit.

Once you choose what items you want to include in your session, I’ll take note of it. Then on your session date, I’ll have them steamed and ready for you to arrive. Just show up and let me take care of everything!

What’s in your newborn client closet?

My newborn client closet has a large selection of swaddles, bows, baby caps, decorative baskets, textured rugs, and even a mini crib! I have gender-neutral options, as well as options for boys and girls. Take a peek at the selection below!

Do I need to bring anything to my session?

I have almost everything baby needs for your session but you’re always welcome to bring additional items. Most of my parents want to bring a few sentimental items that add a special touch to the photos.

Feel free to bring things like:

  • Baby’s first shoes
  • Baby’s first blanket
  • A special stuffed cuddly
  • Pacifier
  • Bottles (I guarantee baby’s going to need a snack break!)
  • Your outfits from when big brother or sister was a baby
  • Your 4-legged children (cats & dogs welcome!)

You can also bring your own outfits and items if there are colors I don’t have or if you want baby to coordinate with your outfits! We will discuss what you may need in more detail during your pre-planning appointment, plus you’ll get additional tips in my signature Newborn Prep Guide!
